About browser warnings

Chrome may flag new or unfamiliar downloads as “suspicious”. RetroPinJuke’s Windows files are currently unsigned, so Windows may also show “Unknown publisher”. These warnings alone do not confirm malware. Use “Verify your download” below to compare your file with the published checksum.

Internet access is needed for music and radio. Radio needs no YouTube key.

FROM DOWNLOAD TO FIRST SELECTION

A few steps. Then press play.

No cabinet required to try it. Start on your desktop and move to your pinball setup when you’re ready.

  1. 01

    Install or open.

Run the installer, or double-click the portable EXE. The first launch opens Setup. Choose a name for your cabinet profile.

  2. 02

    Choose your displays.

Assign the playfield, backglass and optional DMD in Setup → Displays. Use the test patterns to check orientation. For a single screen, keep Backglass disabled.

  3. 03

    Connect your music.

For videos, enable YouTube Data API v3 in Google Cloud and add your key in Setup → YouTube. Follow the step-by-step API key guide below. Or choose Radio to listen without a key. Demo mode lets you try the controls first.

  4. 04

Map your buttons. Make a selection.

In Setup → Input, add bindings for navigation, Select and Back. Save & launch the jukebox. A keyboard works too: arrow keys to browse, Enter to select, Space to pause.

MUSIC SETUP How to get a YouTube API key

You’ll need a Google account and a browser. Create the key on your desktop, then enter it on the PC running RetroPinJuke. Radio works without a key.

  1. Sign in to Google Cloud. Open the Google Cloud Console and sign in with your Google account. Accept the welcome terms if prompted.
  2. Create a project. Click the project selector at the top of the page, choose New Project, name it RetroPinJuke and click Create. Once created, select that project. Keep the same project selected throughout these steps.
  3. Enable the YouTube API. Open APIs & Services → Library. Search for YouTube Data API v3, open it and click Enable. You can also open its API Library page directly. Choose the Data API, rather than YouTube Analytics or Reporting.
  4. Create your key. Go to APIs & Services → Credentials → Create credentials → API key. Copy the generated key. RetroPinJuke uses a standard API key; you don’t need an OAuth client, consent screen or service account.
  5. Restrict it to YouTube. Open the key’s settings (or click Restrict key). Give it a name such as RetroPinJuke cabinet. Under API restrictions, choose Restrict key and select only YouTube Data API v3. For this desktop app, leave Application restrictions as None: website/referrer restrictions don’t match its desktop requests. Click Save. Keep the key private; the API restriction limits which service it can access, not who can use it.
  6. Add it to the jukebox. In RetroPinJuke, open Setup → YouTube, paste the key into API key and click Validate key. After validation succeeds, choose Save & launch. You can now browse and search for music videos.

If the key doesn’t work

  • API disabled or access denied: check that YouTube Data API v3 is enabled in the project that owns your key, and that the key’s API restrictions include it. Allow a few minutes after changing Google Cloud settings, then validate again.
  • Invalid key: copy the entire key again, without extra spaces. Use the generated API key string, rather than a project ID or OAuth client ID.
  • Referrer or restriction error: check Application restrictions. A key restricted to a website won’t work with the jukebox’s desktop API requests.
  • Quota exceeded: Google limits API usage for each project. Check APIs & Services → YouTube Data API v3 → Quotas & System Limits. If your daily allowance is exhausted, wait for it to reset. Radio remains available.

Don’t post your key in screenshots or share it with other users. If it is exposed, replace it in Google Cloud and update the jukebox. Google may change its console labels; its official credentials guide and API key settings guide provide the latest reference.

CABINET EXTRA Add it to PinUP Popper

Use the installed edition for faster startup. Create a shortcut to the installed EXE in a folder such as C:\vPinball\PopperLinks. Its target should include your profile name:

"C:\vPinball\RetroPinJuke\RetroPinJuke.exe" --profile "Default Cabinet"

Add a Jukebox emulator with that folder as Games Folder and LNK as the extension. Set these scripts:

Launch script

START "" "[STARTDIR]Launch\VPXSTARTER.exe" 1 1 60 "RetroPinJuke Playfield"
cd /d "[DIRGAME]"
start "" "[GAMEFULLNAME]"

Close script

"[STARTDIR]LAUNCH\PUPCLOSER.EXE" WINTIT "RetroPinJuke Playfield" 4 1

In Games Manager → Add New Games, select Jukebox and scan. Add the shortcut, then use Playlist Config to add it to HOME LIST or your chosen playlist. Exit with Popper’s Exit Emulator button to close the jukebox and return to the wheel.

Give it a place on your wheel.

Download the matching artwork for your Popper setup. Both images are high-resolution PNGs with transparent backgrounds.

Add your wheel image

  1. Save your preferred PNG to the cabinet PC.
  2. Open PinUP Popper Config → Media Manager and select your RetroPinJuke game entry.
  3. Drag the downloaded PNG from File Explorer onto the Wheel Image box. Popper will name it to match the selected game.
  4. Check the preview, then return to the frontend to see it on the wheel.

See Popper’s official Media Manager guide for more media options.

A COUPLE OF GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you press play.

Is it really free?

Yes. Download and use RetroPinJuke for free. There’s no subscription, account or paid edition.

Do I need a YouTube API key?

You need your own YouTube Data API v3 key to find and play music videos. Internet radio works without one. With no key, demo mode displays sample labels so you can set up your cabinet and try the controls; those sample tracks do not play. See How to get a YouTube API key in the setup section above.

Will every radio station show album art?

Artwork depends on the station’s track information and a matching cover being available. Some stations send only a programme name or no track metadata. When there’s no cover, RetroPinJuke displays the station information instead.

Does it download songs or videos?

No. Videos play through YouTube’s official embedded player, and radio streams come from station servers. Availability, advertisements and playback restrictions depend on those services.

Can I use it without a pinball cabinet?

Absolutely. Use a single monitor and a mouse or keyboard. Cabinet buttons, extra displays and PinUP Popper are optional.
